Are you bored? Here are some ideas!

Read the school newspaper--they just published new stories online!

Download the Libby app on your phone. This easy to use app gives you access to the public library's books and audiobooks. While school has been out I've read two books, and the one I'd recommend to you is one that will be used in book clubs for juniors next year. It's called I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter.

Maybe podcasts are of more interest. Here is a list of podcasts recommended by another teacher. Disclaimer: I have not listened to all of these, so please preview before listening.

  • Following Harriet (about Harriet Tubman--remember we discussed her work with the Underground Railroad when we talked about Frederick Douglass)
  • 30 Animals That Made Us Smarter (About what humans have learned from the animal kingdom)
  • The Herstory Podcast (the stories of 50 historical women)
  • Serial (Season one of this podcast is the true story of a high school girl who was murdered and her ex-boyfriend who was accused of committing the crime. I've listened to this one and it is fascinating! The story will definitely suck you in. Please note: this one definitely contains mature language, and is about a murder. It is, however, used in many classrooms around the country.)

How to Complete Missing Work and Missing Reading Quizzes

Some of you were absent over the last week or two of school and have work to complete to help raise your grade. Here is how to do that:

1. If you missed any reading quizzes, the makeup assignment has been assigned to you in Teams. You will need to go to Teams, open the assignment, and complete the work there to make up the missing quiz.

2. If you missed assignments, I've created a spot in Teams to submit those missing/late assignments. Teams will only let me attach five documents to that page, so I'm linking the assignments here, too. When they are done and you're ready to submit them, please submit to Teams. This will help me keep your work organized by class period. If you aren't able to do the work digitally and would rather take a picture of your work and submit that, that is fine, too. After submitting work, please complete this form. Teams will not notify me.

Ch 1 Audioguide

Ch 2 Audioguide

Ch 3-4 Quote Work for people who were absent

Ch 5-6 World Cafe for people who were absent

Harlem Renaissance Makeup for students who did not complete the original assignment

Realism summative

What is Realism?

If you need an assignment that isn't linked here, please email me and I'll add it.

Take care!

Student Tasks March 23, 2020

Hello students!

Here are two tasks to get you started this week:
  1. Visit our class's Flipgrid site. You must sign in using Microsoft Office and your ISD credentials. Our grid can be found here. Watch my video, then post your own. Please note that you can download the Flipgrid app on your phone or tablet and use it that way. If you are shy about being on camera, feel free to use a filter, prop a book in front of the camera, show us your pet instead of you, etc.
  2. Read chapters 7-13 of Their Eyes Were Watching God and post ONE journal entry (same format as we were doing before) to Teams. If you'd already completed more, please post them! Remember, to access Teams you need to login to office.com using your ISD credentials.
Stay safe and wash your hands! 💖

Class Update

Hello!

We are getting ready to get back up and running the week of March 23. You will receive more communications in the coming days as I continue to plan, but we will be continuing our reading and discussion of the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God.

These are strange times, so please feel free to reach out to me via email with any questions or concerns.

In the meantime, here are things students can be working on:

  • Several students never submitted the realism summative assignment. Completing this assignment now will help improve your grade. If you are missing this assignment, it has been assigned to you in TEAMS. Please log into Office365 using your ISD credentials, find your American Lit class, and complete this assignment.
  • If you did not submit your journal entries on our last day of school (either because they weren't done or because you were absent), please go to Teams and submit them there.
  • Go back in the grade book and complete any other missing work. I've set up places in Teams to submit much of this work, but ask if you have a question. If you complete any No Red Ink or Actively Learn missing assignments, you will need to send me an email telling me your name, your class period, and exactly which assignments you want me to check. None of these programs alert me when you submit work.
If you are in need of a laptop, a wifi hotspot, or meals, please visit this link.

Stay safe, stay home, and wash your hands. 💗

Ch 5-6 (3/12/20)

If you were absent yesterday, here is the assignment you need to make up. Due to our extended absence from school, you will need to submit this work digitally to turnitin.com. Please email Mrs. Dragavon if you need the class code or other information.

I also collected journal entries and will be grading these while school is out. If you were absent and/or did not turn in your journals, please drop them off to the main office by 2:30 on Monday, 3/16. Make sure that when you drop off the work it has your full name and class period on it plus my name. You will have to buzz in at the front door and tell them that you are dropping off work for your English teacher. I also set up a place in TEAMS where you can submit this work digitally. (Login to your Office 365 account, click on the blue T for Teams, go to American Lit, find the assignment, read the directions, and upload your work.)

Please keep your mind active by continuing to read Their Eyes Were Watching God! Stay safe and healthy.
